MEET FLIPPY. Starting in 2021 this tireless fry station specialist worked in 10 Chicago locations of White Castle, America’s first fast food hamburger chain. Flippy, working behind a shield to reduce the risk of burns, could automatically fill frying baskets and empty them. It also identified foods that needed to be fried and placed them in the appropriate basket. White Castle’s employees could concentrate on other tasks while Flippy cooked French fries safely. Flippy, an AI-powered robotic assistant, is the reason for this.

According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFOR), more than half-a-million industrial robots have been installed in the world. Most of them are used for manufacturing. A shortage of skilled workers has prompted more companies to use robots for a variety of tasks, including filling orders online in warehouses and delivering room service in hotels.

Restaurants are using AI to enhance the human element of their business.
