The team discovered for the first that the physical forces created by the mechanical instability in the cell-cell contacts of the gonad were responsible for the decision to kill the cells. The study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that the mechanical force generated at the cell contact points is the driving force behind the physical separation of the germ cells. This in turn determines the fate of the individual cells. The cells are either pushed out of the corridor, or they are pulled away from the contacts.
