Scientists have identified a molecular switching that is crucial for tissue regeneration
The University of Cologne-led research team has identified Ets21c, a transcription factor that is a key regulator of the regeneration system in the adult intestine of Drosophila. The study shows that there are trade-off mechanisms in stress resilience and lifespan.
The intestinal epithelium plays a role in digestion and absorption of nutrients, but it also acts as a barrier to prevent the entry of pathogens or toxic substances. The intestine can be renewed throughout an organism’s life by stem cells capable of differentiating in order to maintain tissue integrity and function.
Alternatively, stem cell dysfunctions have been associated with tissue degeneration and cancer development. The research sheds new light on both the favorable and stress conditions of regenerative processes.
