Study shows that neural stem cells age quickly
In a recent study published in Cell Stem Cell by a team headed by USC Stem Cell scientist Michael Bonaguidi Ph.D., it was demonstrated that the stem cells of our nervous system, neural stem cells, age rapidly.
Bonaguidi is an assistant professor of Stem Cell Biology, Regenerative Medicine, Gerontology, and Biomedical Engineering, at the Keck Medical School of USC. We’re interested in the biological ageing of neural stem cell, which is particularly susceptible to the ravages time. This could have implications for normal cognitive decline, which most of us experience with age, as well for Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, and brain injuries.
Albina Ibrayeva (first author), a Ph.D. student in the Bonaguidi Lab at the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC joined colleagues to examine the brains and aging of mice.
