A new study sheds light on the potential benefits of exercise as a key strategy for type 2 diabetes prevention

Exercise can help ‘fight’ diabetes

Millions of people worldwide are affected by type 2 diabetes. The disease has a number of complications and an increased risk for premature death. The University of Sydney conducted a recent study that sheds light on the role of physical activity to prevent the onset of diabetes type 2, even for individuals who have a high genetic susceptibility. This study highlights the importance of physical activity as a strategy for chronic diseases prevention, and offers encouraging news for those who want to reduce their risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Longevity. Technology: Type 2 diabetes has a significant impact on public health worldwide. Type 2 diabetes can lead to a variety of complications including kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and nerve damage. A person with type 2 diabetics often has a shorter lifespan and a reduced healthspan because of the increased risk for developing other chronic diseases. The findings of the study add to a call for effective preventive strategies that reduce this burden on families, individuals and healthcare systems around the world.

The study, published in British Journal of Sports Medicine involved 59 325 adults who were enrolled in UK Biobank. Researchers also looked at genetic markers that are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetics. Participants wore accelerometers around their wrists in order to track their levels of physical activity. The study assessed the health outcomes of participants over a period of up to seven-years.
