A study shows rapid improvement with ISRIB in reversing age-related mental decline in mice.

The drug reverses age-related mental decline within days

Scientists at UC San Francisco have found that a drug called ISRIB can reverse the age-related declines of memory and mental flexibility. ISRIB has been shown to improve memory function in mice months after traumatic head injury, reverse cognitive impairments associated with Down Syndrome, reduce noise-induced hearing loss, combat certain types of prostate carcinoma, and even enhance cognition.

Researchers in a new study published in the open-access journal eLife on Dec. 1, 2020 showed that aged mice regained youthful cognitive abilities, accompanied with a rejuvenation in their brains and immune cells, which could explain the improvement in brain function.

\”ISRIB’s extremely rapid effects demonstrate for the first time that age-related cognitive loss may be caused by an reversible \”blockage\”, rather than a more permanent degradation,\” stated Susanna Rose, PhD, Lewis and Ruth Cozen chair II and professor at the departments of Neurological surgery and Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.
