Aging and the Mortality Alarm: A Century of Life Cut Short

I started worrying about the future me when I was old.

My mum was about to celebrate her 100th birthday and she looked forward to receiving a card from Queen Elizabeth II. She was living in a facility that had experienced multiple lockdowns because of Covid. We began preparing for her birthday; \”hold-the-date\” cards were sent.

We applied on Mum’s behalf to receive a birthday card from Queen Elizabeth II. My dad called me one early morning, following another lockdown. He said, \”I don’t think she will make it until the weekend.\” \”Come quickly.\”

She hung on another 18 days. My family was told by the palliative care nurse that this time is about being rather than doing. We wanted Mum to feel comfortable, loved and in as little pain as we could as her body prepared for death.
