Can AI-powered robot companions combat loneliness in humans?
Researchers at Auckland, Duke and Cornell Universities suggest that companion robots with artificial intelligence could one day be used to combat the loneliness epidemic.
The report is published in the July 12, issue of Science Robotics. It outlines some ethical considerations that governments, policymakers, technologists and clinicians should take into account. They also urge stakeholders to work together to develop guidelines on trust, agency and engagement as well as real-world effectiveness.
The paper also suggests a new method to determine whether a robot companion is actually helping someone.
