AMD Introduces Flagship GPU Instinct MI300X with 192GB Memory for AI/HPC

AMD Expands AI/HPC product line with flagship GPU-only Instinct Mi300X with 192GB memory

As part of the AMD Data Center event today, the company also provided an update on their almost-finished AMD Instinct accelerator family. The next-generation HPC processors from AMD, which combine Zen 4 CPU cores with CDNA 3 GPUs in a single package have been repackaged as a family of multi-SKU XPUs.

AMD has also announced a pure GPU component that uses the same design as the MI300A APU. The MI300X uses only CDNA 3 tiles, rather than the MI300A’s mix of CPU tiles and GPU tiles. This makes it a high-performance, pure GPU, which is paired with HBM3 memory. The MI300X, which is aimed at the market for large language models, has been designed to meet the needs of customers who require the maximum amount of memory they can afford in order to run even the largest models.

AMD Instinct MI300, first announced in June last year and further detailed at CES 2020, is AMD’s major entry into the AI/HPC market. The server-grade APU is unique in that it packs Zen 4 CPU cores as well as CDNA 3 GPUs onto a single chiplet. AMD’s main competitors do not have (or won’t have) a CPU+GPU combined product this year like the MI300 Series. This gives AMD a unique solution that has a truly integrated memory architecture and ample bandwidth between CPU and GPU tiles.
