BacterAI: Unlocking AI’s Potential by automating microbial experiments

AI could run one million microbiological experiments every year, according to a study
A robot-controlled artificial intelligence system can conduct up to 10,000 scientific experiments per day. This could lead to a dramatic increase in the speed of discovery, from medicine to agricultural science to environmental sciences.

The research, which was published today in Nature Microbiology by a professor at the University of Michigan, was conducted by an expert.

The artificial intelligence platform BacterAI mapped the metabolic activity of two microbes that are associated with oral health – without any baseline data. Each species of bacteria requires specific nutrients for growth. Bacteria eat a combination of 20 amino acids to sustain life. The U-M team was interested in finding out what amino acids the microbes that live in our mouths need to grow.
