Scientists unveil new details about cellular process that prevents cancer spreading
Researchers have characterized for the first-time a unique molecular pathway of early programmed cell death, or apoptosis. This process plays a critical role in the prevention of cancer.
The study was conducted by Dr. Luke Clifton, STFC ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, Oxfordshire. Professor Gerhard Grobner, University of Umea, and other partners from the European Spallation Source, Sweden, were also involved. This is the latest in a long line of collaborations between this team and researchers who are investigating the proteins that cause apoptosis.
Apoptosis, which is vital for the survival of humans, can be disrupted and cause cancerous cancer cells to grow. They may also not respond to treatment. It is controlled in healthy cells by two proteins that have opposing functions, known as Bax & Bcl-2.
