Study: Human stem cells boost monkey heart after heart attack
After heart attacks, some monkeys were able to regain the ability of their hearts to pump after receiving human embryonic stem cell therapy, according a study published in Nature Biotechnology on Monday.
Scientists have been trying to develop stem cell treatments for heart disease that is caused by a lack of blood flow. According to the World Health Organization, this condition contributed to over 9.4 million deaths in 2016.
Charles Murry, Director of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine of the University of Washington and study author, said: \”We are talking about the leading cause of death [in humans] in the world.\” \”At the moment, all of our treatments… dance around the problem which is that there aren’t enough muscle cells.\”
