Researchers have made a breakthrough on the search for a cure for AMD
The most common cause of blindness among adults aged 50 or older is age-related macular (AMD), a condition that causes a loss in central vision. It affects an estimated 196,000,000 people around the world. The condition is not curable, but treatment can help slow its progression and preserve some of the vision.
Researchers at the University of Rochester made a significant breakthrough recently in their quest to find a cure for AMD. Researchers have created a three-dimensional (3D), lab model that mimics the affected part of the retina in macular degeneration.
Researchers have developed a model that combines stem cells-derived retinal tissues and vascular networks of human patients with bioengineered, synthetic materials to create a three-dimensional matrix. This allows them to study the mechanisms behind advanced neovascular degeneration (the wet form), which is arguably the most debilitating form of macular disease.
