Limiting calories slows age-related leaky gut
Researchers at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging’s Kapahi Lab have demonstrated in a recent study that the loss of epithelial cell layers that make up the gut membrane is age-related.
Inflammaging, a low-grade chronic inflammation, is believed to be triggered by \”leaky stomach\” as we age. Inflammaging is thought to be the result of the loss of integrity of the gut membrane. Inflammaging is a precursor to many age-related illnesses, such as atherosclerosis [3-5], arthritis, hypertension and cancer.
This new study suggests caloric restrictions, or caloric-restriction mimetic, could help prevent an increase in gut permeability and increase the healthspan of humans, the time we live without illness.
