AI Day: Should it be celebrated on July 16th or not?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing our lives in a positive way, making them easier, more enjoyable, healthier, and hopefully longer. In 2013, and 2014, deep learning advances led machines to outperform humans at image recognition, text identification, voice recognition, and other tasks. The generative AI, despite many proof-of concept papers, became mainstream in 2014 after Transformers and the Generative Adversarial Networks were published. This led to many advanced generative apps and tools that have transformed our lives. Jensen Huang’s predictions, as the CEO of NVIDIA, a company which has been at the forefront of the AI revolution and enabled it, have proven to be true, and in some cases, exceeded expectations. ChatGPT and other Large Language Models based on Instructional Transformers are now in widespread use. ChatGPT is already better than me at many writing tasks. We even co-authored a paper. There are currently millions of professionals who work on AI systems and applications. These professionals, like the author of this piece, would celebrate an ‘International AI Day,’ if one existed.
Social media was ablaze with posts celebrating the \”AI Appreciation day\” on July 16, often using the hashtag #AIAppreciationDay. Several academic institutions and large brands, such as Zeiss and Wistar Institute, followed.
