Cell mapping in the immortal regenerating hydra
:3
The hydra is a tiny freshwater invertebrate that’s related to corals and jellyfish. It has the amazing ability to regenerate its damaged tissue and renew its cells. In just a few days, if you cut a hydra half in two, it will regenerate both its nervous system and body. Researchers from the University of California Davis have traced the fate of the hydra cells. They revealed how three lines of stem cell become nerves or muscles.
Celina Juliano is an assistant professor at the UC Davis Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Stefan Siebert, a project scientist, and Jeff Farrell, a Harvard University postdoctoral fellow, have sequenced the RNA of 25,000 single hydra cell to track the genetic progression of all differentiated cells.
Juliano explained that \”the beauty of single cell sequencing is that it allows us to capture the genes expressed by cells as they differentiate from stem cells and become their various cell types.\”
