CBT may protect cells from social anxiety
Researchers at the Karolinska institutet reported in the journal Translational Psychiatry that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for social anxiety patients not only helped to reduce anxiety but also seemed to protect against accelerated cellular aging.
The study is the first to better understand the relationship between cellular aging and psychiatric disorders, says Kristoffer MANSSON, lead author at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience of the Karolinska Institutet.
Mentally ill individuals are more likely to develop somatic diseases, like high blood pressure or diabetes, sooner than those who are not affected. Although the causes are not clear, it is possible that mental disorders are linked to shorter telomeres or accelerated cellular aging.
