Columbia University Research Examines the Synergy Between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Human Brain

Artificial intelligence systems (AI) have been inspired by the intricate workings of the brain for a long time. A new branch of research at Columbia University, New York, is aiming to improve the functioning of brains by using AI.

Columbia University, one of the seven universities selected by the National Science Foundation to serve as the headquarters for a national AI research center, received a generous grant of $20 million from the National Science Foundation. The money will be used to bolster the AI Institute for Artificial and Natural Intelligence. ARNI, a consortium of educational institutions and researchers with Columbia as its leader, is a consortium. ARNI’s overarching objective is to make connections between the impressive progress made in AI systems, and the ongoing revolution of our understanding of brain.

Richard Zemel explains that the goal is to create a cross-disciplinary partnership between top AI and neuroscience researchers. This will benefit both AI systems and humans. Zemel stressed that knowledge is exchanged in both directions. AI systems draw inspiration from the brain, while neural networks are similar to its structure.
