Genetics can link age-related diseases
The team published a paper in Nature Aging that describes a novel method for obtaining the first data-driven classification of multiple diseases using the freely available genetic and medical information from the UK Biobank.
Prof. Linda Partridge, co-author (UCL Institute of Health Aging, Max Planck Institute for Biology of Aging), said that advancing age is a major risk factor for many diseases including cancer, dementia and cardiovascular disease. Understanding the molecular connections between the aging and age-related illnesses could lead to drugs that target them for improved late-life health.
The study found that diseases with similar onset ages were more genetically similar than diseases in the three other clusters.
