Is SIRT6 the key to human longevity?
The US-Israeli startup SIRTLab appointed Nir Barzilai, a leading geroscience expert as its Chief Medical Advisor last week. The company focuses on developing therapeutics to boost levels of sirtuin 6, a protein that is strongly linked with longevity.
Sirtuins is a grouping of proteins that are found in all living beings, including humans. They play an important role in the regulation of various cellular processes. Seven different sirtuins exist, with numbers ranging from SIRT1 through SIRT7. Each has its own function. SIRT6’s potential role in healthy aging has attracted a lot of attention over the past few years. SIRTLab, a company that focuses on the protein, has placed it at the forefront of its research.
Longevity. Technology: It has been demonstrated that the SIRT6 protein regulates several key cellular pathways including glucose metabolism and DNA repair, which all play a role in aging. Haim Cohen is a Bar-Ilan University professor and SIRTLab co-founder. His research has been instrumental in the development of therapeutics that have longevity-boosting potential. Boaz Miholi, co-founder of SIRTLab and its CEO, told us more about the company’s longevity-first strategy.
