Scientists find new clue behind age related diseases and food spoilage
Scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have made an unexpected discovery that may help explain why we are more likely to develop chronic diseases and cancer as we age, and also how food decomposes.
Their findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, (PNAS) recently, point to an unexpected connection between the ozone chemical in our atmosphere, and our cells’ hardwired abilities to fight disease.
Kevin Wilson, deputy director of Berkeley Lab’s Chemical Sciences Division, who led the research, said: \”The beauty of the natural world is that it uses similar chemistry throughout a system. But we never imagined that we would discover a link between atmospheric and body chemistry.\” Our study is the first that explores another chemical pathway which could affect the ability of cells in our body to respond to oxidative stresses, such as pollution over time.
