Now we know why it’s hard to kill blood stem cells
Our hematopoietic (hematoietic) stem cells, which produce our blood and immune system cells, are quiet and inactive for most of their life. They are also the most resilient cells in the system. They can survive levels of radiation and viral infections that would kill other blood cells.
Researchers from Columbia’s Stem Cell Initiative have discovered that HSCs can cheat death. This could lead to the development of new treatments for blood cancers, other diseases associated with aging and stem cell transplantation.
