Does higher education slow brain shrinkage as we age? A Longitudinal study

The brain does not age faster when you get a higher education

The dominant opinion is that education can slow down the rate of brain shrinkage. The evidence is inconclusive, however, because studies are not able to track changes over time. Until now.

Measurement of brain shrinkage with time

Researchers measured brain aging using MRI scans of more than 2000 participants from the Lifebrain biobank and UK biobank. As a result of natural aging, these areas of the mind are susceptible to shrinkage. In a study known as a \”longitudinal\” the brains of participants were scanned three times in 11 years.
