Dr. Anthony Atala, MD, (https://school.wakehealth.edu/Faculty/A/Anthony-Atala) is the G. Link Professor and Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and the W. Boyce Professor and Chair of Urology.

As a practicing surgeon and researcher in the field of regenerative medicines, Dr. Atala has developed 15 applications that have been applied clinically. He has edited 25 books, published 800 journal articles and received more than 250 patents. Dr. Atala has been elected to the Institute of Medicine of National Academies of Sciences as well as the National Academy of Inventors, where he is a Charter Member, and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Dr. Atala has received the US Congress-funded Christopher Columbus Foundation Award. This award is given to a living American working on a discovery which will have a significant impact on society. He also won the World Technology Award in Health and Medicine for making significant and lasting advances. Dr. Atala was named twice in Time Magazine’s top 10 medical breakthroughs for the year and once among the 5 discoveries that could change the future of transplants. Scientific American named him one of the most influential biotechnologists in the world. U.S. News & World Report listed him as one of the 14 Pioneers of Medical Progress for the 21st Century. Life Sciences Intellectual Property Review listed him as one of the key influencers of the intellectual property in the life sciences arena. And Nature Biotechnology named Dr. Atala as one of the 10 top translational researchers worldwide.

Dr. Atala is a founding member of the Tissue Engineering Society, Regenerative Medicine Foundation, Regenerative Medicine Manufacturing Innovation Consortium, and National Cancer Institute Advisory Board. He is also a founder member of Regenerative Medicine Manufacturing Innovation Consortium (RMMIC), Regenerative Medicine Development Organization (RMDO), and Regenerative Medicine Manufacturing Society.
