Electrical stimulation of the brain: a breakthrough in restoring working memory in older adults

The memory of an older person returned to a state similar to that of a 20-year-old.

Electrical stimulation of the brain has restored the memory of elderly people to that of a 20-year-old for the first.

Scientists from Boston University, in the US, have shown that it is possible for people to restore their working memory through re-coupling areas of the mind which become out-of sync with age.

The short-term memory is essential for daily life. It allows for problem solving, reasoning and planning, as well as decision making. For example, it can be used to remember a phone number while writing it down.
