The hardness of the engineered dental coating is higher than that of natural enamel
Engineers may find it difficult to replicate enamel, the hardiest tissue in the body. However, this could have a major impact on materials science and regenerative medical treatments. Researchers have reported a breakthrough by tweaking a mineral’s composition to mimic the microstructure of enamel. This new coating is stronger and more durable.
Scientists in Russia and Egypt have developed a new dental coating that uses hydroxyapatite. This compound is a primary component of bone tissue, mineralized tissues and other human and animal tissues.
Researchers doped hydroxyapatite, with amino acids, that are naturally helpful in the repair and maintenance of muscle and bone structures. These include lysine and arginaine. This resulted in a mineralized coating with properties similar to the main component in natural enamel. The team then applied the material to healthy teeth to observe how well it adhered to dental tissue.
