Engineering Yeast Metabolism for Polyamines and Analogs to Promote Healthy Aging

Cells that improve the health of aging compound

In the future, we can expect to see a growing population and a longer life expectancy. It is therefore crucial to develop better and more reliable treatments for human diseases like Alzheimer’s or cardiovascular disease. In order to ensure healthy aging and overcome the challenges of the ageing process, a team of international scientists examined the potential of biosynthesising polyamines and their analogs that have already been proven effective in treating and preventing age related diseases.

spermidine was one of the most fascinating molecules studied. It is a naturally occurring product in blood, and it is an important cellular process that helps to clear damaged proteins. As people age, the amount of spermidine decreases in their blood. Dietary supplements or specific food products can help maintain a high and stable level of this molecule in the body. These products, however, are not easily produced with traditional chemistry because of their complexity. Furthermore the extraction of natural resources does not make sense from a commercial or sustainable perspective.

The researchers decided instead to use their biochemical toolbox to create polyamines by engineering the yeast metabolism.
