Engineers Develop Desktop Fertility Machines: Cheaper IVF and Wider Access

First babies born with the use of a robot that injects sperm

The engineers from Barcelona sent the robot that they had designed to New York City via DHL last spring. The engineers then took it to the New Hope Fertility Center in New York City, where they reassembled the robot, including a microscope and a mechanized sperm needle. They also assembled a small petri dish and a laptop.

One of the engineers used a Sony PlayStation 5 Controller to position a robotic syringe. It viewed a human ovary through a camera and then advanced on its own. The robot penetrated the egg, releasing a single sperm, before moving forward. The robot has been used to fertilise over a dozen egg.

What is the result of the procedure?

Here are the startups that are trying to create a desktop fertility device. If they succeed, IVF could become cheaper and more widely available.
