Scientists test a wireless navigation system for cosmic rays

GPS has become a part of our daily lives, helping with navigation, tracking and mapping. It also helps us to time events. It has some limitations, namely that it cannot pass through water, rocks or buildings. According to a recent paper published in iScience, Japanese researchers developed a wireless navigation system that relies instead on muons or cosmic rays. The system has passed its first test successfully. It could be used in the future by search and recovery teams to guide underwater robots or autonomous vehicles.

Hiroyuki Tanaka, co-author of Muographix from the University of Tokyo (Japan), said that cosmic-ray muons travel the same speed no matter what they pass through. They can penetrate even kilometers of rocks. We have created a GPS that works underwater, indoors and in buildings using muons.
