Neurodegenerative disorders can be studied by reprogramming human skin cells into aged neurons
\”We reprogrammed skin biopsies taken from Huntington’s patients into neurons. Then, we compared the neurons to reprogrammed neuronal cells from healthy individuals. The results are quite interesting. In neurons of patients with Huntington’s disease, we have discovered several defects which explain some disease mechanisms. We found that Huntington’s patients have problems with the breakdown and recycling of a certain kind of protein. This can cause a lack in energy in their cells.
Researchers have also determined the biological age and found that reprogrammed neuronal cells retain their biological age. This is important if the neurons are to be used in research using the new model system.
