Explore Swarming Behavior of Microrobots: a New Approach to Programmable Active Matter

Researchers study the swarming behaviour of microrobots

Robot technology is no exception. The trend towards smaller and smaller robots is a common one in many industries. Future minuscule robots could be used to deliver medication to specific sites within the body. The foundations of these technologies can be laid by statistical physics.

Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz have taken a fresh approach to this issue. They have analyzed a grouping of robots, and their behavior as a collective of motile units using the active Brownian particle model. Science Advances published the team’s findings that demonstrate there could be another route to realizing programmable active material.

Researchers are searching for ways to accomplish tasks at the nano- and microscales that would otherwise be difficult, especially as miniaturization is reaching its physical limits. A new option is to use a group of robots instead of one robot to accomplish a particular task.
