The Bioinspired Robotics Class offers a variety of surprises
Enter Kim’s class 2.74 (Bio Inspired Robotics).
Kim says that researchers must understand this cognitive bias and tendency towards anthropomorphism in order to develop robots to assist humans with their physical movement. Kim’s interest in robotics is to build robots that can help elderly people in an ageing population where there are fewer young people available to provide services. However, this advancement cannot be made without understanding biomechanics and biology.
Kim says that students need to learn not only how our bodies move, but also how little we understand it. One of our goals in robotics, is to create robots that mimic how elderly people use their arms and legs. But if we don’t understand how we move, then we can’t even begin to tackle this problem.
