Sarcopenia may be caused by the gut microbiota
We’ve all seen the age-related loss in muscle mass, and increased frailty which generally accompany advancing age. The World Health Organization recently classified age-related muscle loss as a condition and sarcopenia became the official term to describe it. Sarcopenia can be caused by a variety of factors. New research indicates that the microbiota is linked to the development of this condition.
What is Sarcopenia?
Sarcopenia causes the age-related loss in muscle mass and strength, which leads to increasing frailty. Frailty can make everyday tasks more difficult, can affect balance and lead to falls. This can be dangerous for older adults.
