Drones on the Waves: Saildrones can collect data that people cannot.
Science fiction paints a frightening picture of the future. Think aliens decimating mankind, as in The War of the Worlds. Sometimes the future can become the present. Who doesn’t like to see successful space launches catapulting people into the sky?
Take Earth’s oceans. They are in the midst of a technological transformation that has largely gone unnoticed outside of some nerdy circles.
Alex De Robertis is a biologist with the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Things that were science fiction a few years ago are now commonplace. This includes saildrones which look like large orange surfboards with a carbon fiber hard sail called a wing and a collection of scientific equipment.
