The 100-year challenge: Applications of amniotic membranes in tissue engineering and regeneration
Amniotic membranes (AmnioM) have many applications in regenerative medicines. It is a biocompatible scaffold that can be used to grow stem cells, and it also contains potent growth factor. The high entrapment property of the Amnio-M makes it an ideal nano-reservoir to deliver drugs. In the last century, Amnio-M has evolved in the clinic from a simple sheet used for topical skin and corneal repairs to more advanced forms such as amniotic extract and powdered solubilized membranes for muscle, cartilage and tendon regeneration. This review examines the evolution of Amnio-M and how new nanotechnology can be used to expand its clinical and tissue engineering applications. Graphical Abstract.
