The ageing process of human lymph nodes is revealed by a new study
Although lipomatosis occurs frequently and is associated with aging, there has been little research and discussion on the subject. Scientists from Uppsala University recently published a study which offers important insights into why lymph node functions decline with age and how this affects the immune system.
Scientists examined over 200 lymph nodes and found that lipomatosis begins in the medulla (the center of the node). The scientists also found evidence that lipomatosis is caused by the conversion of lymph node-supporting cells (fibroblasts), into adipocytes. They also show that subtypes of fibroblasts within the medulla have a higher likelihood to become adipocytes.
This study is an important first step in understanding lipomatosis.
