Exploring the Nature of Aging with Linda Partridge

The Nature of Aging

The aging process is similar across species – from worms to flies, to mice to humans – and involves pathways that are related to early developmental stages. Gordon and Linda Partridge, a guest at the Buck Institute, discuss the evolution of aging mechanisms. They also talk about the role of pathways that sense nutrients, as well as how to get the best benefit from midlife preventative interventions.

Linda Partridge was born in Bath in England in 1950. She studied biology and graduated from the University of Oxford. After three years of research postdoctoral at the University of York she became a Demonstrator at the University of Edinburgh, then a Lecturer, Reader, and finally Professor. In 1994, after many years of living in Scotland, she was appointed Professor of Biometry at the University College London. She is the founding director of both the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, in Cologne, and the UCL Institute of Healthy Ageing. Linda Partridge’s research aims to understand how the rate at which aging occurs in nature, as well as the mechanisms that can extend healthy lifespan in laboratory model organisms. Her research has focused on the role of nutrient sensing pathways such as the insulin/insulinlike growth factor signaling path and dietary restriction.
