Randal, Ken and I discuss many topics around the goal of future uploading of our minds to non-brain system, in order to continue our mental life and expand our experience range. Whole brain emulation is the basic requirement to create a subconscious-independent mind. Two basic approaches are discussed to whole brain simulation. The \”scan-and-copy\” approach suggests that we scan our entire brain structure (at any scale necessary) and then store this scan until a future date, when we will have figured out a way to use that information to create a substrate to house your mind. The \”gradual substitution\” approach suggests we gradually replace parts of the mind with alternative machines. Eventually, the entire brain can be replaced with non-biological materials while still retaining its functionality.
Randal and Ken, both neuroscientists, understand the challenges and magnitude of a project as large as mind uploading. They also know what can be done right now with the current technology to move forward toward this lofty goal. And they are aware of what steps to take in order to make further progress.
