A drug that reduces hypertension can extend life expectancy and slow aging in animals
In worms the hypertension drug, rilmenidine, has shown to slow aging. This effect could theoretically be beneficial for humans in their later years.
This latest study chose rilmenidine because previous research showed that it mimicked the effects of caloric restrictions on a cell level. In several animal models, it has been demonstrated that reducing energy intake while maintaining nutrition in the body can extend life expectancy.
The debate continues over whether this is true for human biology or a risk to our health. Finding new ways to improve old age health without extreme calorie reduction could be the key to finding the same benefits.
