LLNL’s fusion ignition was a success thanks to high-performance computing, AI, and cognitive simulation
Part 10 of a series of articles that describe the breakthrough in fusion technology at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
The results of the famous ignition shot on Dec. 5, 2022 were not a surprise to the hundreds of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists who worked in the design, experimentation, modeling, and simulation teams.
The \”crystal balls\” that increased their confidence before a shot in a breakthrough were a combination of detailed design for high-performance computing and a set of methods combining simulation based on physics with machine learning. LLNL refers to this as \”cognitive simulation,\” or CogSim.
