Glutamine Power: Protecting Muscles Against Injury and Aging

Glutamine is a powerful antioxidant that protects muscles from aging and muscle injury

The team led by Massimiliano MAZZONE (VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology) in collaboration with Dr. Emanuele Berardi, Dr. Min Shang and others revealed a metabolic dialogue between inflammatory and muscle stem cells. Researchers show that enhancing this metabolic crosstalk by using an inhibitor of GLUD1 promotes glutamine release and improves physical performance and muscle regeneration in experimental models of degeneration of the muscle such as trauma, ischemia and aging. This work has a great deal of translational potential. It also represents a major advance in many fields, including muscle biology and stem cell research.

What is the role of glutamine?

Skeletal muscles are essential for moving our bodies, but they also store a lot of amino acids as proteins. They influence energy and protein metabolism in the entire body. A large amount of glutamine was thought to be essential for the metabolism of muscle. Its precise role in chronic degenerative muscle conditions or after trauma was largely ignored.
