Graphene Enhanced Asphalt: the World’s First Road Resurfacing project

The UK’s first resurfacing project to mix graphene with freshly laid road

One area where graphene is expected to have a transformative effect is the fortification of construction materials such as concrete and asphalt. A unique trial is underway to use the material’s remarkable properties to resurface a section of the A1 motorway in the UK.

Scientists hope that by adding graphene to materials such as asphalt, they can create road surfaces with a longer lifespan and lower maintenance costs.

In 2017, we saw an interesting solution from two Italian companies who developed asphalt materials with graphene added to them to reduce the likelihood of it cracking in cold temperatures under heavy loads. The product is called Gipave and also contains plastic pellets. It was recently tested on UK roads to determine if it could extend the life of the surface.
