Harvard Study: The Impact of Inflammation in Cognitive Decline among Aging Adults

Inflammatory proteins may slow cognitive decline in older adults

The results of this study suggest that IL-12, IFN-g and other biomarkers could be used to predict the future health of the brain in cognitively normal individuals–a tool not yet available in medicine.

A new study found that higher levels of two cytokines are associated with a slower rate of cognitive decline among older adults.

Researchers have previously found a link between Alzheimer’s (AD) and inflammation. However, scientists at the Harvard Aging Brain Study and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), made a surprising finding about this relationship.

They report in a study published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association that elevated levels of cytokines (chemical mediators of inflammation) are associated with a slower rate of cognitive decline among aging adults.
