How Drinking Coffee Can Lead to a longer Life

How about coffee as a way to live longer?

Drinking coffee could lead to a healthier life expectancy.

Coffee is a life-saver for many people. It can save them from falling over in the morning from exhaustion or it can prevent an irritating coworker from being enraged by someone who still hasn’t had their caffeine fix. Coffee is one of the world’s most powerful (and mainly metaphorical) lifesavers. Recent studies have shown that drinking coffee can have a positive impact on longevity and health. One study in the UK of 170,000 people found that those who drink between two and four coffee cups a day are 30% less likely to suffer a fatal illness than those who don’t. The same study revealed that a small amount sugar added to coffee did not have any negative effects on health. It is not the first time that such health claims have been made about coffee. In 2019, a team showed that coffee drinkers lived on average two years longer than people who didn’t consume the beverage.

Why coffee? What is it that makes this beverage so important to the health of its drinkers? One might immediately conclude that it has to do with caffeine, which is often regarded as coffee’s most important feature, or even its entire purpose. It makes us more alert and increases our heart rate. This may not be the case, however. Coffee could very well help to prolong life in other ways. Harvard conducted a similar study involving 500,000 British caffeine drinkers, which linked coffee with a 14% reduced risk of dying. The study found that both decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee improved longevity. This suggests that caffeine is not responsible for coffee drinkers’ increased lifespan.
