Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is moving faster than anyone has ever seen it before
\”Hubble has the best spatial and temporal resolution to capture Jupiter’s wind in such detail\”.
Hubble’s recent observations show that wind speeds are increasing again. Will the storm ever return to its former glory, or is this a temporary situation?
A team of astronomers have been monitoring the Great Red Spot using the Hubble Space telescope for more than a decade. The researchers found that between 2009 and 2020, the speed of wind at the outermost edge, also known as the \”high-speed ring\”, increased by 8 percent.
Michael Wong, the University of California Berkeley’s analysis leader, said: \”I asked myself, when I first saw the results, does this make any sense? No one had ever seen anything like this before.\” This is a feat that only Hubble could accomplish. This discovery is only possible because of Hubble’s long-term observations and longevity.
