IBM considers lowering costs by using its AI chip to power a new cloud service
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters), July 11 — International Business Machines, (IBM.N), is looking at using artificial intelligence chips it developed in-house, to reduce the cost of running a cloud computing system it released this week.
Mukesh Khare, the general manager of IBM Semiconductors at a conference on semiconductors in San Francisco told Reuters that the company was considering using a chip named the Artificial Intelligence Unit to power its new cloud service \”Watsonx\”.
IBM hopes to capitalize on the growth of generative AI technology that can produce human-like texts, more than a decade since Watson, its initial major AI system, was unable to gain traction in the market.
