Longevity potential for innovative cancer treatment device
San Diego-based Immunicom developed an innovative device to remove specific factors in blood that inhibit our immune system from fighting disease. The \”therapeutic\” apheresis treatments that are currently available usually involve plasma exchange or modification of cells taken from patients. Immunicom uses a similar procedure for treating patients, but claims that its \”capturing\” of targeted molecules is different from other treatments.
Immunicom develops custom molecules to capture proteins and cytokines. Instead of turning them into drugs, they deploy them through its proprietary cartridges. These are small liquid filters which can be installed into any plasmapheresis device. The cartridges, which are similar to dialysis treatments, are used to reduce the levels of target factors in a patient’s plasma and blood outside of their body. This allows the immune system fight disease.
The company Immunicom claims that while its initial focus was on cancer treatments, its technology could also be used to treat a variety of age-related illnesses and prolong life.
