This episode will take us back to the subject of Alzheimer’s. A disease with a large unmet medical needs, it is projected that over 100 million people worldwide will be affected by this disease by mid-century.
Dr. Rudolph Tanzi, the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy professor of neurology at Harvard University and Vice-Chairman of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, is also the Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit and the Co-Director for the Henry and Allison McCance Center of Brain Health at MGH. He has been researching the genetics behind neurological diseases since the 1980s, when he took part in the first study to use genetic markers to identify a disease gene that causes Huntington’s Disease.
In 1990, Dr. Tanzi earned his Ph.D. degree in neurobiology from Harvard Medical School. His doctoral thesis focused on the discovery of the first Alzheimer’s disease gene, the amyloid-precursor protein (APP), which was published in Science in 1987.
