Klotho: Enhancing cognition in aged nonhuman primates

The longevity factor klotho improves cognition of nonhuman primates aged over 50

Cognitive dysfunction is a major challenge in biomedicine. It is not known whether klotho treatment, a longevity-factor, can enhance cognition in human relevant models, such as nonhuman primates. This knowledge gap represents a major obstacle to the development of therapeutics. The rhesus protein form of klotho was validated in mice, showing that it enhanced synaptic plasticity. Then, we found that low-dose klotho, but not high dose, enhanced memory in nonhuman primates aged over 30 years. Low-dose systemic klotho may be therapeutic for aging humans.
