Scientists Discover an Odd New Phase of Hydrogen
The new solid hydrogen phase, discovered by an international research team, followed the model’s presentation of hydrogen atoms under extreme conditions. To use a food metaphor, their shape changed from spheres that looked like oranges stacked up to something more similar to eggs.
In order for hydrogen to solidify, it usually requires extremely low temperatures and high pressures. The scientists discovered the molecular structure through a machine-learning study of the phase change.
